The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state's roads, bridges and tunnels. And, through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it provides funding for airports, seaports, rail and public transportation. Virginia has the third-largest state-maintained highway system in the country, behind Texas and North Carolina. Since 2002, through efficiency efforts, outsourcing and by shrinking in size, VDOT has achieved annual cost reductions of more than a quarter billion dollars. VDOT employs about 7,500 people full time, compared to 10,380 at the close of Fiscal Year 2001. That’s the lowest level since 1965.
